Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs are Poisonous To Pets

Name: Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs

Toxin: Salicin

Symptoms: abdominal pain, blood in the stool (digested blood may make the stool appears black and tarry), vomiting with or without blood, sluggishness and inactivity, clumsiness or lack of coordination, stupor, and shock .

Additional Information: You should never give medication intended for human use to your pet without checking first with a veterinarian as medications that are harmless for human use may create potentially life threatening situations in pets due to differences in body chemistry. In pets NSAIDs decrease the production of substances that protect the stomach lining and GI tract from the acid and also reduce blood flow to the area. The result can be ulceration and/or perforation of the stomach or intestines. They also decrease the blood flow to the kidneys causing damage and renal failure.

First Aid: Induce vomiting and use activated charcoal slurry, Seek Veterinary Attention.
