Rodent Poison
Toxin:
Anticoagulants, including warfarin, coumarin, brodifacoum, and bromadiolone
Symptoms:
Weakness, lethargy, white or pale gums, lack of appetite, nose-bleeds, bloody
urine, bloody feces, or persistent bleeding from a wound, fatigue, bleeding
gums.
Additional Information:
The majority of rat and mouse poisons contain anticoagulants, like, warfarin,
coumarin, brodifacoum, and bromadiolone which interferes with vitamin K in the
body. Vitamin K is responsible for ensuring that the clotting factors in the
blood function normally and without it, the dog will experience massive internal
or external hemorrhages. Symptoms are usually not seen until about 3-5 days
after ingestion, meaning that the dog may have been poisoned for some time.
First Aid:
If poison was just ingested induce vomiting with activated charcoal or syrup of
ipecac, Seek Veterinary Attention.
