Aloe Is Poisonous To Pets

Name: Aloe

Toxins: Aloe, Emodin, Anthraquinone, Saponins

Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, accelerated defecation, dark brown urine color, tremors, lethargy, possible contact dermatitis to the mouth, throat, nose and face.

Additional Information: Although Aloe is generally considered to be a healing plant or herbal remedy it can be harmful to pets if ingested. Aloe Latex (aka Aloe Juice) is a yellowish, bitter liquid that contains Aloin, it can be found just under the skin of the Aloe leaf an acts as a powerful laxative. When the latex is ingested it can cause accelerated defecation by irritating the large intestines, that puts the pet at risk for dehydration. There is also the possibility of contact dermatitis to the mouth, throat, nose and face in animals with sensitive skin. The ingestion of Aloe by a pet is generally not considered to be life threatening and the symptoms tend to consist of vomiting, diarrhea, change in urine color, and tremors with the pet making a full recovery in 1 to 2 days.

First Aid: Avoid further ingestion of the plant, if contact dermatitis is noted flush the area thoroughly with water. Ensure the pet drinks plenty of fluids to avoid possible dehydration caused by diarrhea. Consult Your Veterinarian.
