Amaryllis Is Poisonous To Pets

Toxins: amaryllidine, haemanthamine, tazzetine, hippeastrine, lycorine, and others.  

 

Symptoms:  gastroenteritis, abdominal pain, vomiting, excessive drooling, diarrhea and shivering.

 

Additional Information: Amaryllis is a plant that is commonly found indoors throughout the year due to its full showy fall and winter bloom. The toxin Lycorine is found primarily in the bulbs and seeds however the entire plant should be considered toxic due to a variety of other lesser toxins present throughout the plant to include amaryllidine, haemanthamine, tazzetine, hippeastrine, and others.

Symptoms can range from mild to extreme depending upon the amount ingested and are generally limited to vomiting, diarrhea, shivering and mild to sever gastroenteritis.  As with similar plants ingestion tends to have an irritating effect on the mouth and esophagus limiting the amount that is ingested.


First Aid: Treatment is rarely necessary as the symptoms will begin to fade within 1 to 2 days with the pet generally making a full recovery. As with any plant or toxin that causes mild to severe diarrhea, dehydration can become an issue. Insure that your pet maintains and adequate intake of fluids and Consult Your Veterinarian. vomiting, diarrhea, accelerated defecation, dark brown urine color, tremors, lethargy, possible contact dermatitis to the mouth, throat, nose and face.
