Name: Branching Ivy Toxins: Polyacetylene compounds and triterpenoid saponins.. The leaves are much more toxic than the berries. Symptoms: Contact of the cell sap with the skin can result in redness, itching, and/or blisters. Symptoms of ingestion will include a burning sensation of throat and mouth; excessive desire to drink, fever, diarrhea, stupor, loss of coordination, convulsions, coma, and rash. Additional Information: Typically found in the form of a houseplant or part of landscaping this is a climbing or creeping vine. The primary toxins are triterpenoid saponins, hederagenin, didehydrofalcarinol and falcardinol. Ingestion is generally limited to small amounts as the plant causes an irritating burning sensation to the throat and mouth limiting the amount of consumption. First Aid: Remove any existing plant material from the pets mouth and flush thoroughly with water, and induce vomiting with a gastric lavage if it is assumed that there is a sufficient quantity of plant material in the stomach.
