Toxins: Ranunculin which by process of enzymatic breakdown results in Protoanemonin

Symptoms: hyper-salivation, vomiting of blood, weakness, bloody diarrhea, bloody urine dizziness, confusion, fainting, convulsions and when a large amount is ingested the symptoms will progress to respiratory failure and fatal ventricular fibrillation.

Additional Information: Clematis is a largely generic term that describes some 290+ individual species of clematis. Clematis is a deciduous or evergreen climbing plant with attractive flowers and a member of the ranuculacea family (buttercups). Fatalities from the ingestion of Clematis are rare, due mainly to the fact that ingestion produces rapid and intense irritation of the mouth and throat, there by limiting the amount that tends to be ingested.

All parts of the plant should be considered toxic and are known to contain ranunculin which by process of enzymatic breakdown results in protoanemonin ( a toxic, irritating antibiotic substance) when ingested.

The toxic effects of protoanemonin on the body include respiratory failure and fatal ventricular fibrillation.

Typically the symptoms of Clematis ingestion include hyper-salivation, vomiting of blood, weakness, bloody diarrhea, bloody urine dizziness, confusion, fainting, convulsions and when a large amount is ingested the symptoms will progress to respiratory failure and fatal ventricular fibrillation.

First Aid: If fear that a large quantity had been ingested you should contact a veterinarian immediacy and they should empty the stomach content by way of gastric lavage. This should then be followed with demulcents such as pectin, glycerin, honey and syrup that form a film to soothe the irritated membranes.

The remaining treatment is purely symptomatic.
