Acetaminophen is Poisonous To Pets

Name: Acetaminophen

Toxin: Acetaminophen

Symptoms: Depression, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, dark tea or coffee colored urine and serum, and eventually death within 2-5 days.

Additional Information: Acetaminophen is used to relieve pain by elevating the pain threshold, it is also able to reduce fever through by acting on the heat-regulating centers of the brain by instructing them to lower the body's temperature when the temperature is elevated. In dogs 45 mg per pound of body weight should be considered toxic, the initial symptoms will begin a few hours after ingestion to include vomiting, dark colored urine and if left untreated death can result.

A typical overdose is the result of a dog chewing on a pill bottle or container with an Acetaminophen type medication inside such as Tylenol, Dayquil, Nyquil, SineAid, Anacin-3, or numerous other medications that contain acetaminophen.

First Aid: Induce vomiting and use activated charcoal slurry. Seek veterinary attention immediately.
